The Basic Peace Officer Academy (784 hours) is designed to provide graduates the necessary basic training to obtain a position as a police officer, constable, deputy sheriff, or any other licensed peace officer position within the State of Texas. All courses must be taken together and successfully passed for the graduate to test for state licensure.
Admission Requirements
- Students must apply to COM and complete the College requirements for entry.
- Applicants must pass a criminal history background check and meet state requirements for entry.
- Applicants must have a high school diploma or a GED.
- Applicants must complete an application specific to the Basic Peace Officer Academy that is available from the Public Service Careers Department.

Effective September 1, 2017, HB 1508 amends the Texas Occupations Code Section 53 that requires education providers to notify potential or enrolled students that a criminal history may make them ineligible for an occupational license upon program completion. Program specific information will be provided in course syllabi.
